Moai status

Postby felixgallo » Thu Aug 16, 2012 1:15 pm

Hi --

there are several outstanding pull requests in moai-dev, some stretching back over 2 months; there have been few recent notable changes to the repo; and the documentation hasn't seen updates for quite some time. Is it correct to surmise that moai-the-framework is now essentially deprecated/'released-into-the-wild' and that Zipline has its focus on other matters?

seeing github commits, patrick hasn't been commiting any code for 25 days. Did he get out of the project?

Haha, no I'm not going anywhere! And Moai SDK certainly isn't deprecated or abandoned. Moai SDK will have at least one active contributor/maintainer for as long as I walk this earth.

Adam is telling me he's waiting for contributor agreements on some (most) of those pull requests. Until we get those agreements we just can't take them in. That said, if you need any of them I am pretty sure you can just pull directly from their authors.

I've been personally focused on cloud services for the last month and a half. More on that later. The last thing I did on the SDK was the expanded hash algorithm support. Am also doing some SDK skunkworks stuff on the side as I have time. I will probably shift back to SDK as my main focus in the next two to four weeks with an emphasis on 3D.

Thanks, and I found that it could be great if your private activities are disclosed in some ways..

People are busy and things take time.

I have contributed using the CC0 public domain tool / fallback license + the Moai contributor agreement. CC0 is not recommended by the OSI, but it was not explicitly rejected either. There has been a back and forth between Todd and I about this and my contribution looks like a go at this point. Unfortunately anything legal slows the whole process down. My guess is that other people are dragging their feet on paperwork or that there are other bumps that need to ironed out before the pull requests can be merged in. All of this is in addition to anything else Zipline has on their plate.
Any original code posted by me is released via the CC0 Public Domain Dedication. It is in the public domain. Do whatever you want with it.

FWIW, my paperwork was returned and filed the day it was requested, but yet still my changes are not merged. I believe there is some sort of block on merging the public contribution side of the SDK internally at Zipline, it can't just be because of the agreements. Maybe the backlog is considered too big a workload to deal with up front right now, or something?

EDIT: Could also be my contrib wasn't up to par, and there's more work to be done, too, of course..

I did notice on the careers page that the listings are down - so either they got hired or the jobs went away. One of them was some type of community manager I believe. Hopefully that person will be able to bring some more insight into the status of MOAI team and the documentation.

Don't overthink it guys - we've just hit a busy spot and are hunkered down for a few weeks. We do need to hire a new person for Dana's role and we have a candidate but haven't been able to move on it yet. Adam has been busy with studio work but will get back to the SDK contributions soon.

Thanks,

Todd

Thanks for the update Todd. I think the reason people have been over thinking it was because there has been little of the communication you are now providing. Without that we only have the option of conjecture. Please remember that we are trying to develop software ourselves and need at least minor updates to avoid concern. Again thank you for your information and update

@ibisum: I'm not sure which pull request you are refering to, was it not sent to moai-dev? as far as I can tell there are only 3 outstanding requests. One is missing an agreement, the other two need closer review and some discussions ( For the lua-crypto one, some work on my part that I don't have the time for atm ). https://github.com/moai/moai-dev/pulls

@adam: I can't access github now (up in the mountains with very little bandwidth remaining for tonights 10-minute Internet session) but I'm referring to the MOAIKeyboardAndroid code, which was submitted some months ago .. Anyway I'll take a closer look next week and try to get it sorted ..
