Its done (as of yesterday) and I'm now faced with the task of how to get it submitted for inclusion in moai-dev .. will take me a few days to sort it out (I have been developing moai-beta-1.0, not -dev) but I will definitely submit a pull request as soon as it is ready. I took the approach described above - the MOAIAndroid code has now a MOAIAndroidKeyboard class, and the main MOAI Activity has a 'fake hidden' TextEdit field with a TextWatcher prompting key inputs .. this actually works pretty good, and I'm impressed with how functional it is to use with the moaigui framework, for example.
Anyway, I will try to get the pull request submitted in the next day or so.
